Commonwealth Edison Company, better known as ComEd, is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation. ComEd provides service to approximately 4.1 million customers across northern Illinois or 70% of the state’s population. ComEd’s service territory borders Iroquois County to the south (roughly Interstate 80), the Wisconsin border to the north, the Iowa border to the west, and the Indiana border to the east. The company manages the distribution of electricity, operates and maintains an extensive power grid infrastructure, and responds to storms and power outages to ensure continuity of service. The company manages a network of 90,000 miles of power lines, 1.3 million poles, and 1,300 substations. In 2023, the company had 6,647 employees and generated $1090 million in net income.
