China Automotive Carbon Fiber Market to Reach $1.1 Billion by 2035
China automotive carbon fiber market was valued at $0.5 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $1.1 million by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.7% from 2026 to 2035. Market development is supported by the expansion of China’s automotive and new-energy vehicle manufacturing base, increasing the requirement for lightweight materials in vehicle structures and components. According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), automobile production reached 34.531 million units in 2025, increasing 10.4% year on year, while new-energy vehicle production reached 16.626 million units, an increase of 29%. NEV sales reached 16.49 million units, accounting for 47.9% of total new-vehicle sales in China. This growth in vehicle production, particularly NEVs, provides an expanding application base for carbon-fiber-reinforced components used in weight-sensitive automotive applications.

China is also expanding domestic capabilities for high-performance carbon fiber that can serve advanced transportation applications. In January 2026, the Chinese Academy of Sciences reported that a T1000-grade carbon-fiber project in Datong, Shanxi, had entered operation, with first-phase capacity of approximately 200 tons per year and tensile strength exceeding 6,600 MPa. The project identifies new-energy vehicles among its future application areas. In addition, Hengshen has developed automotive carbon-fiber processing technologies, including rapid curing, non-autoclave molding, and liquid molding, and has demonstrated carbon-fiber hoods, crash beams, and NEV battery casings. These developments indicate increasing domestic capability in high-performance carbon fiber and composite processing for China's automotive applications.
Composites Segment Gains Momentum
Composites segment is closely associated with automotive carbon-fiber applications in China, particularly as vehicle electrification increases the requirement for weight management and structural efficiency. According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), domestic passenger-vehicle manufacturers produced 24.164 million passenger vehicles in 2025, with an average vehicle curb weight of 1,714 kg. During the same year, China produced 16.626 million new-energy vehicles, representing a 29% year-on-year increase, while NEV sales reached 16.49 million units. The increasing volume of NEV production provides an expanding vehicle base for the use of carbon-fiber-reinforced composite materials in selected lightweight structural and functional components.
China's official data also indicate continued expansion of the domestic NEV fleet, with 5.62 million new-energy vehicles registered during the first half of 2025, up 27.86% year on year, according to the Ministry of Public Security. By June 2025, China's total NEV fleet had reached 36.89 million vehicles, accounting for 10.27% of the country's overall automobile fleet. Carbon-fiber composites can be applied to components such as vehicle body structures, crash-management parts, battery enclosures, and other weight-sensitive components where low density and high mechanical performance are required. The use of carbon-fiber composites in transportation applications is also demonstrated by China's CETROVO 1.0 carbon-fiber metro train, whose carbon-fiber composite body and bogie frame reduced their respective weights by 25% and 50%
Recent Developments
- In January 2026, a T1000-grade high-performance carbon fiber production project in Datong, Shanxi, China, entered operation, marking the country's first domestic large-scale production of T1000-grade carbon fiber. Developed by the Institute of Coal Chemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Huayang Carbon Material Technology, the first phase has an annual capacity of approximately with the material achieving tensile strength above 6,600 MPa. The carbon fiber is planned for applications including new energy vehicles, supporting the development of high-performance lightweight materials for China's automotive sector.
- In November 2025, Hengshen Technology presented carbon-fiber composite technologies for automotive lightweighting at the Shanghai Frankfurt Automotive Parts Exhibition in Shanghai, China. The company showcased rapid curing, non-autoclave molding, and liquid molding technologies, along with carbon-fiber hoods, crash beams, and new-energy vehicle battery casings, highlighting applications in vehicle lightweighting, safety, and battery protection.
