Advancements in PLA (Polylactic Acid) Production Technologies Drive the Market Growth

Published: Nov 2025

Europe bioplastic packaging market was valued at $6,790 million in 2024 and is projected to reach $38.1 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 17.4% during the forecast period (2026–2035). PLA, a biodegradable renewable resource-based polymer, is extensively applied in healthcare, packaging, textiles, additive manufacturing, and 3D printing due to it is transparent and biodegradable. PLA, a renewable bio-based compostable material, is one of the top options in green packaging due it possesses mechanical strength, thermal stability, and barrier properties.

Additionally, the market expansion is fueled by the development of PLA production technologies, which enhance its mechanical and barrier properties, increasing its competitiveness compared to fossil-based plastics. As per the European Bioplastics Org., in December 2024, biodegradable plastics, including PLA and PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoates), account for more than 1 million tons of bioplastics production capacities. This increase to 1.33 million tons by 2024, with the major share expanding from PHA. In 2019, the largest market for bioplastics was packaging, with over 1.14 million tons, or over 53% of consumption, and other applications such as building construction and automotive experienced a significant rise in their utilization of bioplastics.

  • In March 2025, Futerro, a French biorefinery company, launched engineering for its future European biorefinery, focusing on the production of lactide (two platform molecules) and PLA, intending to develop a green chemistry and renewable polymer sector.
  • In June 2023, TotalEnergies Corbion stated that its Luminy Polylactic Acid (PLA) bioplastics qualify under the EU's Taxonomy Regulation's criteria for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Sugarcane-derived bioplastics are both biobased and biodegradable and absorb 1.8kg CO2 from the air. Its manufacturing capacity uses a mere 0.08% of agricultural land in Thailand, qualifying PLA bioplastics as sustainable compared to fossil-based plastics.
