Emerging R&D on Electric Vehicles to Offer an Opportunity for European Automotive Ceramics Market

Published: Sep 2020

The European automotive ceramics market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% during the forecast period. In July 2020, The German Government declared that it would invest over $1.7 billion in battery cell research and production, opening with nearly $354 million funding awarded to Varta, a battery company. This grant is the first step in a new initiative established under the EU Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) program. Apart from Varta, the other four companies with battery-cell projects in the country will also be getting finance from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, which include Umicore, BASF, BMW Group, and Opel.

The German Government’s assistance for battery-cell projects could generate significant gains for the country. The demand for electric vehicles has witnessed a rise in the region, particularly Norway. As of May 2018, in Norway, there were 230,000 registered battery electric cars (BEVs). The Norwegian Government agreed that all new cars sold by 2025 should be zero-emission (hydrogen or electric). The adoption of hydrogen and BEVs have been led by policy instruments and a comprehensive range of incentives. Multilayer ceramic capacitor is commonly used in electric vehicle electronics and subsystems owing to their small size, extreme temperature ratings, and easy surface mount form factor. As with the battery management system (BMS), ceramic capacitors (rather than film capacitors) are recommended to withstand the high operating temperatures of the DC/DC converter. Therefore, the rising focus on electric vehicles R&D and production is creating a scope for the growth of the European automotive ceramics market.
