European Electric Vehicle Battery Market to Reach $45.2 Billion by 2035 Supported by Foreign Direct Investment and Strong Manufacturing Capacity Expansion

Published: Jan 2026

European electric vehicle battery market was valued at $17.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $45.2 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 9.9% during the forecast period (2026-2035). Europe has established a strong foundation for expanding battery and electric vehicle manufacturing, supported by a rising level of investment in recent years. Each investment is associated with defined annual production capacities, including EV assembly volumes and, for batteries, cell manufacturing and pack assembly capabilities. By September 2025, European manufacturing plants were estimated to have the capacity to produce around 4.6 million electric vehicles annually, encompassing both battery electric and plug-in hybrid models, as well as approximately 251 GWh of battery cells. In comparison, demand in 2024 totalled about 2.3 million electric vehicles and 410 GWh of batteries, nearly 90% of which were used in EV applications, with the remainder allocated to stationary storage. As a result, Europe’s production capacity is sufficient to manufacture roughly twice the number of EVs required by domestic demand and to supply close to two-thirds of its battery cell needs.

European EV Battery Market Driven by Localized Design and Recycling Initiatives

The major companies operating in the European electric vehicle battery market include Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), LG Energy Solution Ltd., Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., SK on Co., Ltd and Volkswagen PowerCo GmbH among others. Major players are increasingly strengthening their European presence by localizing battery design, manufacturing, and lifecycle solutions, including the development of region-specific battery technologies tailored to performance, longevity, and climate conditions.

  • In January 2026, Li-Cycle Holdings Corp. announced an exclusive recycling partnership with an additional premium automotive OEM to process lithium-ion battery materials at its Germany facility. Under the agreement, battery manufacturing scrap and end-of-life materials from an EU-based electric vehicle production site will be supplied to Li-Cycle. The partnership expands Li-Cycle’s commercial operations in the European Union and supports its strategy of establishing localized recycling infrastructure to recover critical battery materials for reuse within the regional EV supply chain.
  • In September 2025, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. introduced two lithium iron phosphate battery variants developed specifically for Europe’s EV market, presented in Munich ahead of the IAA Mobility show. One variant delivers up to 758 km range with a projected 12-year lifespan, while the other enables ultra-fast charging, adding up to 478 km in about 10 minutes with improved low-temperature performance. The launch reflects CATL’s strategy to expand localized battery design, production, and lifecycle capabilities across Europe.
