Laser Technology Upgrades Power Europe’s Cinema Modernisation, Driving 4.1% Market Growth Through 2035

Published: Jan 2026

European laser projection market reached a value of $5.1 billion in 2025 and is forecast to grow to $7.6 billion by 2035, registering a CAGR of 4.1% over the 2026 to 2035 period. Replacement of first-generation digital projectors with laser illumination has become a defining driver for the European laser projection market. After leading the global shift from film to digital cinema, European exhibitors are now focused on upgrading performance, efficiency, and sustainability across existing estates. Laser projection directly supports this transition by delivering higher image quality, operational reliability, and measurable energy savings. As ageing lamp-based systems approach the end of life and laser costs continue to decline, exhibitors are accelerating upgrade cycles to enhance premium viewing formats, reduce maintenance burden, and align cinema operations with long-term efficiency goals. This replacement-led momentum is reshaping capital allocation decisions and reinforcing laser projection as the default technology for new and refurbished screens.

The foundation for this trend was laid during Europe’s digital cinema revolution. According to the International Union of Cinemas, European cinemas invested more than €1.5 billion to transition to digital projection, creating the installed base now primed for laser upgrades. Globally, around 13% of cinema screens are equipped with laser projection, yet lamp-based products account for less than 20% of new projector sales, indicating a clear shift in purchasing behavior. Laser systems offer superior colour reproduction, higher contrast, consistent brightness, and lower energy use by generating less heat and eliminating lamp replacement and disposal. European exhibitors are already demonstrating the impact at scale. By the end of 2024, Kinepolis Group had equipped 65 % of its global screens and 81% of its European screens with laser projection, with a target of 75% global laser penetration by the end of 2025. These upgrades are also delivering energy benefits, with laser-equipped screens generating annual savings of 6 GWh.

European Exhibitors Accelerating Laser Projection Adoption

Kinepolis Group

  • Kinepolis began its laser projection journey in 2014 and opened Europe’s first full-laser cinema in Breda, the Netherlands, in 2016. From 2016 onward, all newly opened Kinepolis cinemas have been fully equipped with laser projectors, and the company initiated its estate-wide transition in 2018. By the end of 2024, 745 of its 1,152 screens across Kinepolis, Landmark, and MJR were equipped with laser projectors, representing 65% of its global screen base. In Europe alone, 81% of Kinepolis screens now use laser projection. The group continues to invest in premium formats, including Laser ULTRA, which combines 4K laser projection with Dolby Atmos sound. In 2024, Kinepolis expanded its premium offering with ten new Laser ULTRA theatres and continued its transition toward a 75% laser-equipped projector fleet by the end of 2025.

Imperial Cinema, Copenhagen

  • In 2021, the historic Imperial cinema in Copenhagen, which seats nearly one thousand patrons, completed a major technology upgrade. The venue installed a dual laser projection system alongside a large-format screen and a premium immersive audio system, with content remastered exclusively for THX Ultimate Cinema. This upgrade reflects how flagship European cinemas are using laser projection to elevate large-format and premium viewing experiences.

Savoy Cinemas, United Kingdom

  • Savoy Cinemas, which operates six sites in the UK Midlands, has adopted laser projection as a core component of its sustainability strategy. All Savoy screening rooms have been converted to laser projectors as part of a broader plan covering buildings, culture, retail, and suppliers. This transition has delivered a 75% reduction in projection energy costs, demonstrating how laser technology supports both environmental and economic objectives for regional cinema operators.

Vue International, United Kingdom

  • In March 2025, Vue, Europe's largest privately owned cinema operator and the UK's top exhibitor, partnered with Barco to install over 1,000 Barco Series 4 laser projectors and media servers across its eight-country European portfolio by 2029. The rollout begins in the UK, Germany, and Denmark, starting with Vue Southport and followed by the flagship Vue Westfield Shepherd’s Bush in London, enhancing the big screen experience for moviegoers.

MEGARAMA, France

  • In September 2025, CinemaNext signed an exclusive long-term agreement with French cinema chain MEGARAMA to equip all current and future cinemas in France with BARCO's award-winning Laser projectors. The deal includes deploying new BARCO laser systems for all new openings and expansions and systematically replacing MEGARAMA’s existing Xenon projectors with advanced BARCO laser technology. CinemaNext will upgrade around 50 screens by December 2026.
