The production of rapeseed in the EU is still conventional and does not contain GMO varieties. About 90% of the supply is consumed domestically, while the trade volume in rapeseed oil is small. According to European Commission (2018), the total supply of rapeseed oil was recorded at 10.6 million tonnes, and of this amount, about 90% was for domestic use and rest was exported to countries outside Europe. In terms of consumption of rapeseed oil, in 2018, about 80% was used for food and 15% was for the biodiesel industry, with the remaining going into personal care and cosmetics.
