The shift toward electric vehicle production is increasing the relevance of lightweight materials in Germany’s automotive manufacturing sector. Battery-electric vehicle production reached 1.22 million units in Germany in 2025, representing a 15% increase from 2024, while plug-in hybrid production increased 54% to approximately 0.45 million units, according to VDA. The growing volume of electrified vehicle manufacturing provides a domestic application base for carbon-fiber-reinforced materials used where weight reduction, structural performance, and material efficiency are required. Germany’s automotive production therefore remains an important end-use environment for carbon-fiber materials, particularly as vehicle manufacturers increase electric and lightweight vehicle production.
Germany’s EV Manufacturing Surge Accelerates Demand for Lightweight Carbon-Fiber Components
Germany’s electric-vehicle manufacturing base has expanded significantly, increasing the domestic requirement for lightweight materials used in vehicle structures and components. According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), Germany produced 1.67 million electric passenger cars in 2025, representing a 23% increase from 2024. Electric vehicles accounted for 40% of total passenger-car production in Germany, while battery-electric vehicle (BEV) production reached 1.22 million units, up 15%. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) production increased by 54% to approximately 0.45 million units.
The expansion of electric-vehicle production is increasing the application scope for lightweight materials, including carbon-fiber-reinforced components, where weight reduction can support vehicle efficiency and structural requirements. Germany produced approximately 4.15 million passenger cars in 2025, an increase of 2% from 2024, with electric vehicles representing two-fifths of domestic passenger-car output. VDA data also recorded 856,600 electric passenger-car registrations in Germany in 2025, including 545,100 BEVs and 311,400 PHEVs.
Recent Developments
- In February 2026, Teijin Carbon announced from Wuppertal, Germany, the expansion of its Tenax Next sustainable carbon-fiber portfolio and plans to showcase new product demonstrators and development collaborations. The initiative focuses on increasing the use of sustainable carbon materials while maintaining the processing and performance requirements of advanced composite applications.
- In March 2025, Teijin Carbon launched Tenax IMS65 E23 36K 1630tex, its first 36K intermediate-modulus carbon fiber, in Wuppertal, Germany. The product delivers a tensile strength of 5,800 MPa and tensile modulus of 280 GPa and is designed for high-speed filament winding and prepreg production, supporting cost-effective lightweighting applications.
