Airbag Market to Reach $31.7 Billion by 2035

Published: Oct 2026

Airbag market was valued at $16.9 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $31.7 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2026 to 2035. Growth is supported by rising vehicle production, expanding safety requirements, and continued development of advanced occupant-protection systems. According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), global vehicle production increased from 92.7 million units in 2024 to 96.4 million units in 2025, representing a 3.9% increase. The expansion of the global vehicle fleet increases the requirement for integrated restraint and occupant-protection technologies, including frontal, side, curtain, and other airbag systems.

Road-safety requirements are another factor supporting airbag-system development. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported in July 2026 that approximately 1.16 million people die annually from road traffic crashes, while 20–50 million more suffer non-fatal injuries. More than half of global road traffic deaths involve vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. These safety challenges continue to support the development and integration of passive safety systems across different vehicle categories.

Curtain Airbag Segment Expands Through Advanced Occupant Protection

The curtain airbag segment is witnessing continued development as vehicle manufacturers and safety-system suppliers adapt occupant-protection technologies to changing vehicle architectures and interior layouts. In October 2025, Toyoda Gosei announced the launch of curtain airbags for the Honda Prelude sports coupe, with the system developed to accommodate limited installation space while protecting against rollover events. The development reflects the application of curtain airbags in vehicle designs where available interior space and occupant-protection requirements need to be addressed together.

In January 2026, Toyoda Gosei announced that its curtain airbag was adopted for the IM Motors LS9, marking its first adoption by a Chinese automaker. The newly developed airbag is 15% smaller than the previous model while meeting the protection requirements of China-NCAP. Toyoda Gosei also used computer-aided engineering (CAE) during development to optimize the airbag structure and deployment performance. These developments indicate continued product engineering toward compact curtain-airbag designs that can be integrated into different vehicle configurations while maintaining specified occupant-protection performance.

Recent Developments

  • In June 2025, Toyoda Gosei conducted an in-house real-vehicle crash test to accelerate the development of a motorcycle airbag designed to protect riders during frontal collisions. The company is using the test results along with simulation technology to refine the airbag for motorcycle applications, where limited installation space and different rider positions create specific protection requirements.
  • In February 2025, ZF LIFETEC introduced the Active Heel Airbag, designed to provide a stable heel impact point for occupants in flexible seating positions and support lower-leg protection during crashes. The technology complements the knee airbag and is designed for integration beneath the vehicle floor carpet, with availability for automakers planned from 2028.
