Rise in Establishment of Several Nuclear and Thermal Power Across the Developed Economies Will Drive the Growth of the Global Cooling Tower Market

Published: Jan 2022

The global cooling tower market is anticipated to grow at a considerable CAGR of 3.2% during the forecast period (2021-2027). One of the major uses of cooling towers is in the nuclear and thermal power plants. A cooling water system is also bee utilized in the cell of the thermoelectric power plant that utilizes a steam turbine to generate electricity. For example, the Harris nuclear power plant situated in the Washington, the US, has a 523-foot-high cooling tower, which is 20 miles from downtown Raleigh. Though, another Brunswick nuclear power plant which is located 180 miles southeast in Southport which does not have a cooling tower. Both nuclear power plants use a one-through cooling system where water is taken from a source like a river, lake, or reservoir. But the main difference is based on the source of the cooling water and their location.

The key objective of the cooling system at both power plants is to cool the plant and protect the environment. Moreover, a new power plant that is larger than 100 MW is mandated to use cooling towers by the Clear Water Act of 1972, to assure the protection of the aquatic life in the lake, river, or form the source of cooling water. To provide the cooling water for the Harris plant, Harris Lake was constructed with a surface area of 4,100 acres. The cooling tower basin is pumped with the water from the lake, which circulates through the plant’s condenser, absorbing the heat from the steam and traveling back to the cooling tower. The cooling process is mostly similar at the Brunswick plant with the difference in the source of water. The water is directly pumped into the plant’s condenser from the Cape Gear River. After its use warm water is discharged and cooled on its way to the Atlantic Ocean over miles of discharge canals.
