In July 2022, Ultima Genomics raised a $600 million investment community for a low-cost sequencing platform that delivers the $100 genome. The company is set to develop a new era in genomics by developing a “fundamentally new sequencing architecture which includes different approaches to flow cell engineering, sequencing chemistry, and machine learning.

In September 2021, the Rockefeller Foundation in collaboration with 20 organizations from the public, private, and non-profit sectors funded $20 million by strengthening organizations' abilities to sequence and share genomic information and other data rapidly. These newly funded grants have expanded country and regional capacity for sequencing the genomes of pathogens in sub-Saharan Africa, India, and the US.

In September 2019, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) granted approximately $29.5 million for advancing the reference sequence to generate and maintain the most comprehensive reference sequence of the human genome. This was maintained by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), which develops a multi-genome reference sequence that is as universal and complete and represents 350 genomes from the human population.
