Rise in Advancements and Investments in Air Separation Technology

Published: Aug 2023

The global gas mixtures market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 5.9% during the forecast period (2023-2030). Air separation technology, also known as the cryogenic distillation process, allows the separation of pure gases from air by cooling it until it liquefies. Then, the different components are selectively distilled based on their various boiling temperatures. This method is widely used for air separation and can produce gases of high purity. However, it is energy-intensive. In addition to cryogenic distillation, other commercially employed methods to separate single components from ordinary air include membrane separation, pressure swing adsorption, and vacuum pressure swing adsorption. These alternative approaches provide viable options for specific applications and are chosen based on factors such as energy efficiency and purity requirements.

Air separation technology plays a crucial role in various industries such as metal production, electronics, and chemicals due to its fully automated system. An air separation plant effectively separates atmospheric air into its primary components, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and other rare inert gases. This increasing demand for air separation technology has led to a significant rise in the establishment of air separation units globally

For instance, in August 2022, Linde India Ltd. signed a long-term agreement with Jindal Stainless Ltd. for the establishment of a 1,450 tonnes per day Air Separation Unit (ASU). This ASU will fulfill the industrial gases requirement for Jindal Stainless Ltd.'s expansion project at Kalinganagar in Odisha. The ASU's production capacity includes 1,450 tonnes of oxygen, 1,800 tonnes of nitrogen, and 64 tonnes of argon daily. Moreover, the unit will have additional capacity to meet the demand in the merchant market. Similarly, in October 2021, Linde India's Board approved the proposal for a 250 tonnes per day merchant ASU in Dahej, Gujarat. This move aims to support growth in the gases business in Western markets and achieve cost savings.

These advancements and investments in air separation technology demonstrate its vital role in various industries and its potential for continued growth in the future.
