Increase in the Substantial Cultivation of Organic Crops Globally to Bolster the Growth of the Market

Published: Jan 2024

The global horticulture lighting market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 9.1% during the forecast period (2023-2030). An increase in demand for organic food has led to a substantial increase in the cultivation of organic crops, leading to a ripple effect in the horticulture lighting market. The adoption of sustainable and resource-efficient technologies, such as solid-state lighting (SSL) in horticulture, offers to maximize crop productivity while minimizing energy consumption. There is increasing acceptance of horticulture produce from the country. This has occurred owing to concurrent developments in the areas i.e. state-of-the-art in cold chain infrastructure and quality assurance measures. According to the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), The National Horticulture Database during 2021-22, India produced 107.24 million metric tonnes of fruits and 204.84 million metric tonnes of vegetables.

Various Programs developed using academic-based plant research to determine best design an LED horticulture light based on optimal spectral distribution and fixture performance to promote healthy plant growth. For instance, in March 2022, Acuity Brands, Inc. launched Verjure™,  a professional-grade horticulture LED lighting solution that offers efficacious and consistent performance for indoor horticulture applications. Developed using academic, plant-based research, the Verjure™ Pro Series LED luminaires are designed to support all stages of plant growth from veg to flower.

Vertical farms can increase density, height and energy efficiency by counteracting the environmental impacts caused by micro-climates and fixture waste heat pervasive in commercial grows featuring passively cooled lights. For instance, in November 2021, Agnetix launched PHENOM liquid cooled multi-sensor and imaging smart horticulture lighting system for vertical farming. PHENOM is designed for crops that require a Daily Light Integral (photosynthetic light measurement) for optimum growth ranging from 15-30 DLI, such as lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and strawberries, to much higher DLI crops such as cannabis, which requires over 40 DLI.

To provide the red wavelengths needed for biomass growth, and to reduce the reliance on less efficient phosphor-converted white emitters to cover the red part of the spectrum. This enables growers to achieve higher overall efficiency. For instance, in May 2022, ams OSRAM, in optical solutions, launched the OSLON® Optimal family of LEDs, based on the latest ams OSRAM 1mm2 chip for horticulture lighting, that offer an outstanding combination of high efficiency, reliable performance and great value. The new OSLON® Optimal LEDs are available at launch in Hyper Red (660 nm) and Far Red (730 nm) colors.
