Rapid Installation of Hybrid Power Solutions, and Advantages Offered by it, Propels the Market Growth

Published: Mar 2020

The global hybrid power solutions market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.3% during the forecast period. A hybrid power solution combines multiple types of energy generation and storage or uses two or more kinds of fuel to power a generator. It involves pairing photovoltaic (PV) plants with batteries, and other types of hybrid or co-located plants with wide-ranging configurations.  According to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in 2021, there were nearly 300 hybrid plants of >1 MW, operating across the US, totaling nearly 36 gigawatts of generating capacity and 3.2 GW/8.1 GWh of energy storage. Moreover, in 2021, Massachusetts has the largest number of PV hybrid plants, 54 plants total, 49 of which are PV+Storage, though plants all include <7 MW of PV ?With 37 total plants, California has the second highest number of PV hybrid plants across the US, 12 of which have installed PV capacities >100 MW.

Hybrid power plants provide significant value to the electric grid system, especially as shares of renewable energy. Many manufacturers and developers are proactively developing hybrid power plant strategies to ensure plant profitability in markets to provide energy that is more predictable and controllable. For instance, in December 2022, Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), announced the commissioning of its third hybrid power plant in Rajasthan having generating capacity of 450 megawatts (MW). This project consists of 420 MW solar and 105 MW wind plants.

In May 2022, AGEL operationalized India’s first hybrid power plant of 390 MW. This was followed by the commissioning, in September 2022, of the world’s largest co-located hybrid power plant of 600 MW. Both these hybrid energy generation assets are located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. In June 2022, the Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology (ANERT) set up the first solar wind hybrid system in the State in a tribal hamlet at Chooralmala in Wayanad. The solar wind hybrid power plants, each with a capacity of 1.5 kW, were set up by the ANERT in 10 houses constructed by the State government under a rehabilitation package for the families who were part of the Muthanga land agitation.
