Growing Digitalization in Genomics to Promote Lab Automation in Genomics

Published: Feb 2024

Global lab automation in the genomics market is anticipated to grow at a significant CAGR of 11.5% during the forecast period (2024-2031). The increasing digitalization of genomics has enabled it to find new applications across the life sciences from basic research to healthcare. The rise of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies is enabling DNA/RNA sequencing to take place more rapidly and on a much larger scale. However, to meet the ever-increasing demand for sequencing data, there is a need to reduce costs and further increase throughput which is fulfilled by the automation of labs for genomic sequencing.

Looking towards the growing potential of lab automation in genomics, key players operating in this industry are taking leverage of this technology to increase outputs. For instance, in November 2023, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences and 10x Genomics, Inc. announced a new partnership to expand automation solutions for single-cell assay workflows. As part of the agreement, 10x Genomics plans to develop dedicated Chromium Single Cell kits to be used on a Biomek i7 Automated Liquid Handler by Beckman Coulter Life Sciences. This customized application will automate 10x Genomics single cell library preparation at high quality and large scale, resulting in finished libraries ready for sequencing.

Further, in July 2023, the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust entered a partnership with Automata, an automation company powering life sciences labs, to double its genomic testing capacity through a new robotic sample processing platform. With support from Automata, it will introduce integrated automation for cancer sample testing, to speed up diagnosis of the disease and allow personalization of more cancer treatments. The installation of the new system will increase the hospitals’ next-generation sequencing by around 2,000 tests each month, as well as expand the range of tests the specialist cancer center can carry out.
