The market growth is fueled by the growing need for light and high-energy batteries in aerospace and transportation applications. For instance, in October 2024, Saft unveiled a new 28V lithium-ion battery for air transport with a reduced profile, lighter weight, and increased energy density, ideal for business aircraft and helicopters. The maintenance-free battery contains more than twice the energy in the same volume and weight as a lead acid battery and thus lowers an aircraft's overall weight by 20-30 kilograms. It also has built-in smart features for instantaneous health and status data and complies with thermal runaway containment as per DO-311A1 requirements.
Advancements and Strategic Developments in Aerospace and Defense:
- In November 2024, Saft developed a new 28-volt lithium-ion (Li-ion) main-ship battery designed for business aircraft and helicopters with major weight reduction and better performance. The prototype is now ready for aircraft original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to start bench-testing for future applications. It has smart monitoring functions for real-time battery state and health information, and it has a Mil-Spec interface and a DO-311A1-compliant vent and case designed to suppress thermal runaway.
- In July 2025, Honeywell acquired Li-ion Tamer, a technology company supplying early detection of thermal runaway to avoid battery fires. With more than 30 international patents, Li-ion Tamer is relied upon by battery original equipment manufacturers globally. The acquisition expands Honeywell's portfolio of fire life safety within its Building Automation business. As demand for lithium-ion batteries is anticipated to increase more than 30% per annum through 2030, early detection is imperative in industries such as renewable energy and cloud computing. Li-ion Tamer's technology offers up to 30 minutes of notice.
