How High Energy Density Batteries Is Fueling Lithium Metal Growth to $6.1 Billion by 2035

Published: Dec 2025

Lithium metal market was valued at $2.0 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $6.1 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 11.8% during the forecast period (2026–2035). The global lithium metal market undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the shift to high?energy?density batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage, and advanced electronics. Once a niche specialty chemical, lithium metal has now become central to the next generation of battery architectures especially as automakers and battery makers push for lithium-metal anodes to unlock higher energy density and longer life. Demand is surging for ultra-pure, application?tailored lithium, prompting collaborations between material innovators, mining companies, and clean-tech firms to scale up manufacturing, reduce cost, and improve safety.

As lithium metal becomes an essential enabler of high-performance, next-gen batteries, production is evolving to support high-throughput deposition, closed?loop extraction, and integration into scalable cell manufacturing. Systems must support not just purity and yield, but also efficient integration into battery cell lines, while ensuring the material can be upgraded or refined with evolving chemistries. For instance, in September 2025, Sion Power, a U.S.-based battery technology company, has developed a vacuum deposition process to improve the production of lithium anodes for next-generation batteries. This approach allows precise control over anode thickness, reduces material use, and improves manufacturing efficiency. Sion Power is currently applying this method in the production of lithium-metal anodes for its Licerion large-format battery cells at its Tucson, Arizona facility.

Recent Developments

  • In May 2025, Pure Lithium Corporation and E3 Lithium announced positive results from Phase 1 of their joint development project focused on producing lithium metal anodes from E3’s lithium brine resources. At Pure Lithium’s Boston facility, lithium chloride concentrate derived from E3’s brines used to electrodeposit high-purity lithium metal (>99.9%) onto copper substrates, forming complete anodes.
  • In April 2024, Sakuu Corporation is collaborating with Livent Corporation to integrate Livent’s LIOVIX printable lithium formulation into Sakuu’s 3D-printed battery manufacturing process. Under their joint development agreement, the partners are testing how this printable lithium material can be used for pre-lithiation and lithium-metal anode applications within Sakuu’s Kavian additive manufacturing platform.
  • In March 2023, MontaVista Energy Technologies Corporation, a China-based developer of materials and production processes for lithium metal batteries, launched the METARY P Series, a new line of lithium metal batteries designed for high power and high specific energy applications. The METARY P Series uses a lithium metal anode and a non-flammable liquid electrolyte, offering energy densities above 400 Wh/kg while maintaining strong power output for safe, high-speed operation.
