Asia’s Expanding Biomethanol Capacity Reshapes Global Methanol Market Dynamics

Published: Nov 2025

Methanol market size was $42.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $68.4 billion by 2035, witnessing a CAGR of 4.2% during the forecast period (2026–2035). Developments in Asia, rather than Europe, are increasingly influencing the price of biomethanol.  Demand is moving east owing to lower production costs, growing certified supply chains, and advantageous FuelEU Maritime regulations that permit certified low-carbon fuels stored outside the EU to count toward compliance. Furthermore, Europe's limited domestic output and anti-dumping duties are maintaining its higher prices.

Recent Developments

  • In August 2025, Biofriends signed an initial agreement with South Korean biogas company Cheongmyeong to build the country's first commercial-scale biogas-based methanol plant. The plant is expected to produce 60,000-80,000 t/yr of biomethanol using 120,000Nm³ of domestically produced biogas generated from Biofriend's Gunsan biogas digester.
  • In August 2025, The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Kandla, has issued a tender for the establishment of India’s first port-based bio-methanol production facility on an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) basis, marking a major step in the country’s maritime green energy transition. Planned with a capacity of 10 tonnes per day (TPD), or 3,500 tonnes per annum (TPA), the plant will use oxy-steam gasification technology to convert biomass into bio-methanol.
