These batteries offer more range, shorter charging times, and less weight. These batteries also combine the advantages of liquid and solid electrolytes and reach an energy density of up to 20–50% higher than that offered by current conventional cells, with reduced flammability and improved mechanical stability. It thus enables longer range, shorter charging time, and lightweight battery packs, which help e-bikes, e-scooters, and other LEVs.
In 2025, Universal Transmissions (UT) cooperated with WELION (Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.) to bring a semi-solid-state battery for e-bikes to the market in 20.3Ah and 25.4Ah variants. Compared to conventional lithium-ion packs, these modules deliver up to 245.9 Wh/kg, surpassing Bosch’s latest PowerTube 800Wh (203.2 Wh/kg).
