Growing Role of Automation in the Mining Drills and Breakers Market Boosts Market Size to $39.2 Billion by 2035

Published: Nov 2025

Mining drills and breakers market size was valued at $18.5 billion in 2025 and is anticipated to reach $39.2 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% during the forecast period (2026–2035).  Autonomous drilling has seen significant growth, owing to improvements in safety and productivity, as well as continued innovation from OEMs; however, blasting is still in the early stages of automation.  Drilling and blasting are among the most risky mining processes.  Drill rigs can do much of their job autonomously, effectively eliminating the need for humans or reducing their exposure to risks such as dust, noise, vibration, and explosives. As a result of ongoing technological progress, large mining companies have already made significant investments in the technology. Companies such as Rio Tinto operate one of the largest autonomous drilling fleets.  As of 2024, it contains 26 drill blast holes that are operated from a remote operations center, where an operator may organize activities for each drill for an entire shift rather than conducting the job on-site.

Many manufacturers have included automation features in their equipment to further improve drilling operations' accuracy and efficiency. Automated features like Auto Drill, Auto Level, and Auto Mast Angle (a ZR-specific feature) are already included in Komatsu's base drill control systems, which are available in its 320XPC, ZR77, and ZR122 blast drill models. These applications facilitate tele-remote operations.  The business provides an Auto Pilot system for complete automation, which is an upgrade that can finish an operational drilling mission that the operator has already specified. By using data insights, Komatsu and other OEMs are looking to optimise this process further by taking insights from data. Automation will enable the mine to optimize and respond to changing conditions much more quickly since the machine will be able to get updated missions and handle those changes without compromising accuracy or overall production.

Recent Developments

  • In September 2025, Epiroc collaborated with Luck Stone to introduce the autonomous SmartROC D65 drill rig in the US. This is an important event since it is the first fully autonomous surface drill to be delivered to the global quarry market. Compliant with the Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) Level 4 standard for full autonomy, the rig operates under remote supervision via Epiroc’s Common Automation Panel (CAP) and Link Open Autonomy (LinkOA) platform, enabling seamless data integration and fleet management.
  • In May 2025, Sandvik Mining introduced AutoMine Surface Fleet, a new system that allows operators to control more than 15 Sandvik surface i-series drill rigs from any linked site location. The technology provides flexibility while minimizing downtime and increasing productivity during shift changes. AutoMine surface fleet leverages autocycle capabilities for continuous rig operation with minimal human intervention, automating processes such as stabilizing, precise positioning, collaring, drilling, reliable pipe handling, hole finishing, and tramming to the next hole.
