Increased Demand for Sustainable Structural Material Leads to Growth in the Global Nanocellulose Market

Published: Jun 2022

The global nanocellulose market is anticipated to grow at a considerable CAGR of 19.5% during the forecast period. The primary factor driving the nanocellulose market is the increasing demand for sustainable structural materials for plastic replacement. Plastic plays an essential role in modern life although it possesses environmental risk. Market players choose not to employ sustainable materials due to their limited mechanical qualities and complex manufacturing process. To replace petroleum-based plastic a new bioinspired material cellulose nanofiber (CNF) has been introduced in November 2020.  The University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) leads a team that has developed a way to make the material with a structure to nacre from wood-derived fiber and mica with mass production flexibility, good procedure, and tunable color.

The natural nacre, such as bricks and cement, has a structure at a multiscale level which facilitates it to be both strong and tough. The researchers use the TiO2-coated mica micro platelet (TiO2-mica) and CNF by the projected directional distorting assembly approach to simulate the systematic brick and cement structure inspired by the nacre. These materials have more strength and toughness which is twice as high as extraordinary performance engineering plastics including polyamides and polycarbonate, making them a strong competitor for petroleum-based plastic. Further, these materials can adjust to a temperature ranging from 130 °C to 250 °C, while ordinary plastic becomes soft at high temperatures. So, the highly organized TiO2 and CNF materials meet the sustainability goals, become environment friendly, and possess better mechanical and thermal properties than plastics due to which the materials are anticipated to play a key role in the nanocellulose market during the forecast period.
