Cities are Actively Opting Road Safety Solutions to Increase the Safety of Their Citizens

City administration is opting for road safety solutions in order to improve traffic management in a better way and to reduce accidents. Global market players, as well as domestic players both, are actively getting contracts from the government bodies all across the globe related to number plate recognition, wrong lane warning, and other traffic management & road safety solutions. In September 2019 Clearview Systems received an order to develop the wrong way warning road safety technology in the South East trunk road network of Scotland. The system detects vehicles incorrect turning onto the slip road and flashes a ‘no entry’ warning sign to the driver to alert them. In August 2019, Thomasville in Georgia installed cameras that detect speeding drivers in school zones. For this, the city has signed a contract with RedSpeed, a traffic camera company. It will enforce stricter speed enforcement as traffic cameras with be installed on every school campus. The cameras can recognize a license plate can locate drivers with at least 10 km over the speed limit. The cameras will capture the picture and will notify the police through e-mail.

In May 2019 City Council of Avilés, Spain renewed Kapsch TrafficCom agreement for the management of traffic control systems for the next four years. The contract is more than $1.1 million including the implementation of EcoTrafiX, a system to capture and monitor traffic data. The system will be used to manage traffic in real-time as well as to improve the road safety of the city. 

In May 2019 Jenoptik installed ten semi-stationary speed monitoring devices with TraffiStar S350 laser scanner in Cologne, Germany. It is to increase traffic safety in all public places. By the use of front and rear cameras both directions of travel will be monitored simultaneously. Speeding offenses by motorcycles can also be detected by the cameras. 

It was first tested in 2016 in the city and now they have been installed in accident risk areas including kindergartens, schools, hospitals, and retirement homes. Earlier to this, the same company Jenoptik received an order for 144 radar-based TempoCam systems for mobile speed monitoring to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in November 2018. In the same month, the company received an order for 600 radar-based TraffiStar S390 measurement systems and 300 TraffiTower 2.0 housings for stationary speed enforcement in various countries of the Middle East & North Africa region.
