Significant Rise in Infectious Diseases to Reflect Positively on the Global Sulphonamides Market

Published: May 2020

The global sulphonamides market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of nearly 4.0% during the forecast period. Rising prevalence of infectious diseases is primarily driving the demand for sulphonamides as an antimicrobial to inhibit bacterial growth. Sulphonamides are used for the treatment of several infectious diseases including meningitis, tuberculosis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and eye infections. Rising demand for contact lens has increased the concerns regarding eye infection. As per the American Academy of Ophthalmology, in the US, approximately one million eye infections that require a trip to the doctor or hospital happen annually, several of these infections are related to the use of contact lens.

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, nearly 45 million people wear contact lenses. Wearing a contact lens is a major risk factor for microbial keratitis, a corneal infection caused by bacteria. In addition, poor hygiene is a major risk factor for several eye complications, such as microbial keratitis and another contact lens–associated inflammation. This results in the adoption of topical sulphonamides as an anti-infectives for the treatment of infections of the eye. It can be applied as an eye drop or ointment to stop bacterial growth. Doctors generally recommend to not wear contact lens while using this medication.

Rising prevalence of urinary tract infections is further encouraging the demand for sulphonamides. Increasing ageing population is among the major causes of UTIs among individuals. However, it can affect people of all age group. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), urinary tract infection (UTI) is the major cause of morbidity and healthcare spending among all age group individuals. An estimated 40%-50% of women witnessed having UTI at some point in their lives. This increases the demand for antimicrobials for the treatment of UTIs.

Sulfonamides act to restrict bacterial dihydropteroate synthase by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). It interferes with the uptake of PABA into folic acid, which is an important component for the development of bacteria. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) can be recommended by the doctors to take the benefit of the synergy between trimethoprim and sulfonamides. The activity of TMP-SMX comprises common urinary tract pathogens, both aerobic gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Therefore, the rising prevalence of infectious diseases has led to the global sulphonamides market.
