The Government of India has also reported continued expansion in automotive manufacturing and advanced-technology production. In December 2025, the manufacturing of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers recorded 33.5% year-on-year growth in the Index of Industrial Production. The PLI-Auto Scheme, with an approved outlay of ?25,938 crore, is focused on domestic manufacturing of Advanced Automotive Technology products and strengthening the automotive manufacturing value chain. These developments increase the industrial base for applications of carbon-fiber-reinforced materials in lightweight automotive components and structures.

Lightweight Automotive Manufacturing Supports Carbon Fiber Demand

India's expanding automotive production base is increasing the potential application of lightweight materials, including carbon-fiber-reinforced composites. According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, India produced 53.8 lakh passenger vehicles, 11.1 lakh commercial vehicles, 12.2 lakh three-wheelers, and 255.0 lakh two-wheelers during January–December 2025. The same data recorded exports of 8.6 lakh passenger vehicles and 49.4 lakh two-wheelers, indicating the scale of India's vehicle manufacturing and export activity. This production base supports opportunities for lightweight composite materials in automotive components and structures.

Government initiatives are also supporting domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive products. The PLI-Auto scheme, with an approved outlay of ?25,938 crore, had attracted ?44,326 crore of investment and generated 67,820 jobs by March 31, 2026. The scheme targets Advanced Automotive Technology products and requires a minimum 50% domestic value addition for eligible products. Increasing domestic manufacturing and localization of advanced automotive technologies can support the development and adoption of specialized materials, including carbon-fiber composites, for lightweight vehicle applications.

Recent Developments

  • In March 2026, the Ministry of Textiles announced the approval of a project for the indigenous development of intermediate-modulus carbon fiber at CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL) under the National Technical Textiles Mission. The project supports domestic research and development of carbon-fiber technology and is relevant to applications across advanced technical textiles and composite-material industries in India.
  • In 2024, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (NPL), New Delhi, conducted research on carbon fiber polymer composites to improve their through-plane mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties by introducing carbon nanomaterials. The research is relevant to the India Automotive Carbon Fiber Market as the project identifies the automobile industry as an application area for lightweight CFRP structures. The project is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
