Government Support to Indian Aviation Industry Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

Published: Oct 2020

The Indian aviation industry will see a considerable growth of 4.5% during the forecast period. The recent rise in the COVID-19 cases in India has caused significant turbulence in the Indian aviation industry growth. Furthermore, airline companies are suffering significant losses owing to the pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns have made airline companies fleets grounded. To survive the pandemic, aviation companies such as Indigo and GoAir made some significant pay cuts including other cost-cutting measures such as furloughs to their employees. Earlier, it was announced by the Government of India that international flight operation will resume from 30th June 2019.

However, the unrelenting spike in COVID-19 cases in June made the government extended the restriction period. In June 2020, India's aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a circular stating the extent of the ban on the operation of international commercial flights till July 15. However, this recent extension in restrictions and bans excludes cargo or other flights. However, domestic flights operating in the country were restarted on 25 May 2020 which is aiding to the slow recovery of the Indian aviation industry. With the resuming of domestic airline operations, the airline companies are stepping up their security measures against the COVID-19 as per the government’s guidelines. This is anticipated to increase the operating cost for aviation firms, which in turn will force airlines to raise their ticket prices in the post and during the COVID-19 scenarios.
