Japan's carbon-fiber industry is also developing materials for automotive and mobility applications. Teijin states that its Tenax carbon-fiber filament yarn is used in thermoset and thermoplastic composites, including automotive applications, while the company also offers dry reinforcements and thermoplastic composite materials. Mitsubishi Chemical has expanded its carbon-fiber prepreg portfolio for mobility applications, including the BiOpreg #500 series manufactured using plant-derived resin at its Tokai Plant in Aichi
Continuous Carbon Fiber Segment
Continuous Carbon Fiber segment is supported by the use of continuous carbon-fiber materials in composite structures requiring high strength, stiffness, and weight reduction. Teijin states that its carbon fibers are used as reinforcement materials for composites and offers carbon-fiber products through its Tenax portfolio. The company identifies composite applications across transportation and other industrial fields, supporting the use of continuous carbon fiber in lightweight structural components.
Mitsubishi Chemical is expanding the performance range of carbon-fiber composite materials through new prepreg technologies. In July 2026, the company introduced Xlink Tech-HT (#375) and Xlink Tech-HS (#372) carbon-fiber prepreg series, developed to improve the impact resistance and damage tolerance of CFRP made with high-modulus carbon fiber. The company stated that the materials are intended for applications ranging from mobility to industrial uses, supporting the development of lightweight and durable CFRP components.
Recent Developments
- In July 2026, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation developed two new carbon fiber prepreg series, Xlinktech-HT (#375) and Xlinktech-HS (#372), designed to improve the impact and damage resistance of high-modulus carbon-fiber CFRP. The new materials enhance the balance between rigidity and durability and are intended for applications including mobility and industrial uses.
- In December 2025, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation announced plans to enhance high-performance carbon fiber production capacity at its Tokai Plant in Aichi, Japan. The phased expansion, planned from 2025 to 2027, is expected to approximately double the plant’s current production capacity and support demand for high-performance carbon fiber used in applications including hypercars and other lightweight products, contributing to Japan’s automotive carbon fiber manufacturing capacity.
