North America Automotive Carbon Fiber Market to Reach $3.3 Billion by 2035

Published: Nov 2026

North America automotive carbon fiber market was valued at $2.1 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $3.3 billion by 2035, expanding at a 4.9% CAGR from 2026 to 2035. Market growth is supported by vehicle lightweighting, increasing use of advanced composites in automotive structures, electric-vehicle development, and demand for materials that provide high strength at lower weight. According to the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA), North American vehicle production remained substantial in 2025, with the US, Mexico, and Canada together accounting for more than 15.5 million vehicles. This large regional automotive manufacturing base provides a significant application environment for carbon-fiber-reinforced components.

Vehicle electrification is creating additional opportunities for lightweight composite materials. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation reported that electric vehicles represented 9.6% of new US light-duty vehicle sales in 2025, with 164 electric models available for sale. The increasing deployment of electric vehicles is relevant to carbon fiber because manufacturers use lightweight composite materials in selected structural, body, battery-related, and performance applications to manage vehicle weight and improve material efficiency.

Vehicle Lightweighting and Growth of Composite Applications

The automotive industry is increasing its focus on lightweight materials as manufacturers seek to improve vehicle efficiency while meeting changing powertrain and performance requirements. Carbon fiber provides high specific strength and stiffness and can therefore be incorporated into composite structures where weight reduction is an important design consideration. The expanding North American vehicle manufacturing base and growth of electric mobility are supporting opportunities for automotive carbon-fiber suppliers. Toray, Hexcel, Teijin, and other manufacturers are expanding carbon-fiber, prepreg, thermoplastic, recycling, and composite capabilities to address automotive and mobility applications.

Recent Developments

  • In March 2025, Syensqo entered into a technical and commercial collaboration with Vartega to convert dry carbon-fiber and prepreg waste from its North American sites into recycled carbon-fiber bundles. The recycled material will be incorporated into Syensqo’s ECHO carbon-fiber-reinforced speciality-polymer portfolio for automotive applications, including structural parts, dampening rings, and transmission-related components. The collaboration supports the development of recycled carbon-fiber materials and circular composite manufacturing across the North American automotive industry.
  • In February 2025, Hexcel launched its new HexPly M949 cosmetic finish prepreg for automotive applications, designed to produce carbon-fiber components with improved surface quality for interior and exterior parts. The company also showcased recycled carbon-fiber veil technology and carbon-fiber reinforcements for automotive structural and aesthetic applications.
