Multi-Year Cinema Modernization Programs Drive 6.6% Growth in North America’s Laser Projection Market Through 2035

Published: Jan 2026

North America laser projection market stood at $5.9 billion in 2025 and is expected to expand to $11.2 billion by 2035, reflecting a CAGR of 6.6% over the 2026 to 2035 forecast period. North America’s laser projection market is being driven by a structural upgrade cycle within the cinema exhibition industry, as major operators move beyond first-generation digital systems toward higher-performance, lower-cost-of-ownership projection technologies. Laser projection is increasingly positioned as the preferred replacement for lamp-based digital projectors due to its superior image quality, extended lifespan, reduced maintenance needs, and lower energy consumption. As exhibitors pursue premium presentation formats and operational efficiency at scale, laser projection has become a core component of long-term capital expenditure strategies across the region.

This transition builds on the earlier digital cinema conversion that began in 2006 and reached near-universal adoption. According to the Motion Picture Association of America, by the end of 2024, the US had around 40,000 cinema screens, while global screen count stood at approximately 243,000, with 96 percent already digitized. Industry sources indicate that, as of 2024, laser-equipped screens accounted for a low-teens share of the global installed base, while lamp-based systems represented less than one-fifth of new projector sales. Laser projectors offer a wider color gamut, brighter images, and lifespans up to twenty times longer than lamps, allowing higher upfront costs to be offset through lamp replacement savings, reduced energy use, and lower maintenance. Reflecting this shift, nearly all new projectors sold by Moving Image Technologies, Inc. now use laser light sources.
