Prevention from Cervical Cancer: Government Launched Vaccine for Girls between 9 to 14 years

With the union budget 2024-25, to support the Viksit Bharat by 2047 scheme and Nari Shakti, Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman proposed vaccination to prevent cervical cancer and the amalgamation of various schemes for maternal and child care.

To begin the vaccination initiative government has decided to provide vaccination for girls aged between 9 to 14 years. The government is focusing on educational drives to prevent cervical cancer and encourage vaccination in the eligible category.

Cervical cancer is the second-most common cancer among women in India and develops in a woman’s cervix. India recorded nearly 25% of total demise due to cervical cancer globally.

Currently, CERVAVAC, a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer manufactured by the Serum Institute of India is currently available in private hospitals for Rs 2,000 per dose. MSD Pharmaceuticals also sells their HPV vaccine Gardasil 4, for Rs 3,927 per dose in India.

With the new proposal for cervical cancer prevention vaccination, the government of India has decided to set up more medical colleges by utilizing existing hospital infrastructure.

Along with this vaccination proposal, the government has also launched one comprehensive program to bring synergy between various maternal and childcare programs. To fulfill the requirements of this one comprehensive program government is launching an upgraded program for Anganwadi called ‘Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0’.  Through this government is aiming to improve nutrition delivery, early childhood care, and development.

To support Mission Indradhanush, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman proposed a newly designed U-WIN platform using the Digital India Initiative for managing immunization and furthering the efforts.

The government of India should start a drive to educate women about the benefits of vaccination and the severity of cervical cancer among women in India to raise awareness for prevention. These drives will help the government gain trust among young Indian women toward cervical vaccination and will speed up the process of vaccination in the intended group.
