US Refrigerator Market Driven by Energy Efficiency, Smart Technology, and Domestic Manufacturing

Published: Sep 2025

US refrigerator market was valued at $18.2 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $33.8 billion in 2035, growing at a CAGR of 5.7% during the forecast period (2025-2035). The US market for refrigerators is driven by increasing consumer demand for energy-efficient, intelligent, and sustainable appliances, backed by federal and state-level laws ensuring environmental responsibility and innovation.

Increasing consciousness of climate change, more stringent energy standards from the US Department of Energy (DOE) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and consumer demand for products with lower carbon footprints are driving manufacturers toward green designs, advanced refrigerants, and durable products.

The integration of IoT, AI, and connected home ecosystems is reshaping how refrigerators function, offering predictive maintenance, inventory tracking, voice control, and energy optimization features. At the same time, supply chain modernization efforts are strengthening domestic production, reducing reliance on overseas manufacturing, and improving market responsiveness.

For instance, in December 2023, the US Department of Energy (DOE) finalized new efficiency standards for residential refrigerators and freezers and proposed the first-ever national standards for commercial fans and blowers.

Together, these actions are expected to save Americans about $5 billion annually on utility bills, cut nearly 420 million metric tons of carbon emissions over 30 years, and contribute to nearly $1 trillion in consumer savings projected under the Biden-Harris Administration’s energy efficiency efforts. Backed by manufacturers, consumer advocates, and environmental groups, the refrigerator standards will take effect by 2029–2030, while the fan and blower rule, expected to cut business energy costs by $56 billion over 30 years, could also take effect in 2029.

Key Market Developments

  • In August 2025, GE Appliances, a Haier company, announced a $3 billion, five-year investment to expand US manufacturing, creating 1,000 jobs across five states. The plan includes adding new product lines, modernizing plants with automation, and increasing production capacity at facilities in Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina. This includes insourcing six new refrigerator models at the Decatur, Alabama, plant and expanding laundry appliance production in Louisville. The investment brings GE Appliances’ total US spending since 2016 to $6.5 billion. Boosting output, the company is prioritizing workforce development through training, apprenticeships, and flexible work options, while also supporting community initiatives such as disaster response units for clean water and laundry services.
  • In January 2024, the Department of Energy (DOE) issued a direct final rule and notice of proposed rulemaking to update energy efficiency standards for refrigerators and freezers under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA). After evaluating six potential trial standard levels (TSLs), DOE adopted TSL 4, a level jointly recommended by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers and environmental groups, including Earthjustice and the NRDC. The new standards, set to take effect in 2029 unless withdrawn during the comment period, are projected to deliver major environmental benefits, cutting 101 million metric tons of CO? along with significant reductions in other harmful emissions—while balancing technological feasibility and economic impact.
