Discovering the Magic of Chandrayaan-3

Published: Aug 2023

Exploration has always been at the core of human ambition, and space exploration continues to captivate our imagination. We will take an in-depth look at the exciting Chandrayaan-3 mission and how it aims to uncover the wonders of the Moon and beyond. The exploration and significance of Chandrayaan-3 are not limited to space, but on Earth, various industries and sectors will benefit from it. So let’s get ahead with the blog and discover the magic of Chandrayaan-3.

The Significance of Chandrayaan-3

As we enter a new era of space exploration, the importance of missions like Chandrayaan-3 cannot be overstated. It allows us to gain valuable insights into the formation and evolution of celestial bodies, contributing to a deeper understanding of our universe. This mission promises unlocking secrets that have fascinated scientists and enthusiasts for decades.

What sets Chandrayaan-3 apart is its indigenous development, placing India at the forefront of space exploration technology. With its advanced instruments, it aims to study the lunar surface and interior, providing crucial data for scientific and research purposes. This unique perspective will enable scientists to unravel further the mysteries hidden beneath the Moon's surface.

Embarking on the Lunar Journey

A successful mission requires meticulous planning and execution. Chandrayaan-3 involves a collaborative effort between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and various academic institutions and research organizations. This joint endeavor ensures a comprehensive approach to lunar exploration and fosters international collaboration in the realm of space research.

The key objective of Chandrayaan-3 is to analyze the lunar surface and subsurface, shedding light on its origin and development. It will deploy innovative technologies, such as landers and rovers, to collect and analyze samples, helping scientists unravel the Moon's geological history and potential resources. By doing so, Chandrayaan-3 paves the way for future lunar colonization and resource utilization.

Brains and Muscles Behind Chandrayaan-3

ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), with its fantastic scientist, has once again done it. After the US, Russia, and China… Now India has done it, finally! And there is no one other to give credit for the same except the brilliant scientists of ISRO.

ISRO Chairman- S Somnath, Senior Scientist- Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, Project Director- P Veeramuthuvel, Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)-  S Unnikrishnan Nair, Chairman of Launch Authorisation Board (LAB)- A Rajarajan, Director of U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC)- M Sankaran, among others have contributed to the success of Chandrayaan-3.

However, the contribution made by national and international companies by providing various technologies and parts for Chandrayaan-3 is also worth mentioning here.

• Larsen and Toubro (L&T) supplied several crucial components - from the supply of ground and flight umbilical plates to the manufacturing and proof pressure testing of critical booster segments.

• Hindustan Aeronautics supplied several components to National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), which provided vital support for the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

• Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited supplied its 100th battery to ISRO for the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

• Walchandnagar Industries Ltd has been manufacturing components for all 48 launches since the first launch of PSLV-D1 in 1993.

• Centum Electronics made roughly 300 to 500 components for Indian space missions.

• ISRO roped in Godrej, Hyderabad-based MTAR Technologies, and Bengaluru-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to fabricate the engine and the stage.

Chandrayaan-3 as a Beacon of Scientific and Industrial Progress

Beyond the scientific discoveries it promises, Chandrayaan-3 also symbolizes the spirit of human exploration and the quest for knowledge. It inspires generations to come, encouraging younger minds to pursue careers in STEM fields and marking India's significant contribution to the global scientific community.

Sectors like Space, Defence, Information Technology, and Media, among others, can benefit from the success of Chanrayaan-3.

• ISRO has been actively promoting private participation in the space sector. Collectively domestic private companies in the space sector have raised more than $245.35 million in funding, and with the success of Chandryaan-3 Indian space sector is expected to increase rapidly, reaching $100 billion by 2040.

• Chandrayaan- 3 has provided opportunities for different industry collaborations. For instance, Microsoft has signed a memorandum of understanding with ISRO to fuel space tech startups using technology tools and platforms. As part of this agreement, they will provide cloud-based tools like MS Azure and other AI-powered tools.

• ISRO has been working on developing new technologies such as reusable launch vehicles and Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD). Agnikul, a domestic startup in the country, has completed the test firing of 3D-printed rocket engines.

• ISRO provides satellite-based services in areas such as remote sensing, satellite-based navigation, and satellite-based meteorology and is looking to expand these services in the future. With the success of Chandryaan-3, ISRO is to lend out high-quality satellite-derived data to students, startups, and tech companies at no /minimal costs to stimulate innovation.

We may have been the fourth country to go on the Moon, but we certainly are different and better than the rest. With Chandrayaan-3, India will be the only country in the world to land on the lunar South Pole and is a follow-on mission of Chandrayaan-2 and is aimed to demonstrate India’s capability in soft landing and roving on the surface of the Moon or the lunar surface.

The wonders of Chandrayaan-3 lie not only in the technical prowess and accomplishments but also in the broader impact it will have on our understanding of the universe and our place within it. Its benefits are not just short-term but far predicated ones and not just for space but the businesses on Earth. As we eagerly anticipate the successful completion of this mission, let us celebrate the remarkable achievements of space exploration and the limitless potential that lies before us.
