The global chemical lidar market is estimated to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period. Based on the transmission of laser pulses and analysis of the return signals, light detection and ranging (LIDAR) systems have shown superior capabilities in distant detection of harmful compounds. At distances of a few kilometres, Lidar is a highly sensitive instrument for detecting extremely low quantities of numerous harmful substances existing in the form of thin clouds. The strategy of detecting these hazardous clouds is based on first detecting and measuring the range of the cloud using scattering phenomena, and then determining the composition of toxic clouds using absorption and fluorescence phenomena.

Corridor mapping, environment, exploration, urban planning, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) & driverless cars are some applications of LiDAR. It offers high accuracy, quick acquisition and processing, low human dependency, canopy penetration, and high data density for these applications. LiDAR works similarly to radar and sonar. Instead of radio or sound waves, it uses the time of flight (ToF) of laser dots to create a 3D real-time information model of the real world. 

The LiDAR sensor uses the duration between the outgoing laser pulse and the reflected laser pulse to compute the distance to each object exactly using the speed of light. Every second, LiDAR collects millions of such exact distance measurement points, from which a 3D matrix of its surroundings can be generated. Owing to these benefits, the demand for chemical Lidar is expected to grow significantly during the forecast period. The rising use of LiDAR systems in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the growing use of lidar in engineering and construction applications, the use of lidar in geographic information systems (GIS) applications, the emergence of 4D lidar, and the ease of regulations related to the use of commercial drones in various applications are all factors driving the global chemical Lidar market.
