The global flue gas desulphurization (FGD) market is expected to grow at a moderate CAGR during the forecast period (2021-2027). For instance, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has issued a notification no: S.O.3305(E) titled ‘Environmental (Protection) Amendment Rules, 2015 dated 7.12.2015, for the reduction of suspended particle emissions from the thermal power plant in India. According to this amendment, units with a capacity less than 500 MW have to comply with emission of SO2 not more than 600 mg/Nm3 and with equal and above 500 MW not more than 200 mg/Nm3 SO2 emission. 

The rising health consciousness among people regarding the harmful effects of sulfur dioxide emitting from the flue of coal-powered plants will propel the growth of the market. FGD is the process used to eliminate the traces of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from the flue gas emissions caused due to fossil fuel-powered plants. The flue gas desulphurization process will eliminate approximately 95% of the SO2 from the emissions. The reagents are required for this process including lime, caustic, ammonia, and sodium bicarbonate.

For instance, in December 2020, Andritz AG received an order to supply critical parts and technology for a seawater flue gas desulphurization plant for the Mundra thermal power station of Tata Projects Ltd. These technologies are integrated with seawater treatment and wet stack.
