The global intracranial shunt device market is anticipated to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period (2021-2027). The major factor for the growth of the market is the increase in the number of patients diagnosed with hydrocephalus. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), hydrocephalus is believed to affect approximately one to two in every 1,000 children born in the US. As a result, there is an increasing demand for the treatment of hydrocephalus, which in turn, is accelerating the demand for intracranial shunt devices that relieve pressure on the brain caused by fluid accumulation.

Hydrocephalus is a brain disorder in which the fluid builds up and is stored in the brain, due to which there is the pressure created around the brain. To reduce this pressure shunt is use also called a ventriculoperitoneal/ intracranial shunt. The shunt tube is inserted into the tube and connected to the flexible tube which is placed under the skin and is used to drain the excess fluid into the chest cavity or abdomen from where it can be absorbed back into the body. With the increasing demand among patients for non-invasive shunting procedures, many companies are investing heavily in R&D to make such non-invasive devices.

In March 2021, the US FDA approved Anuncia’s breakthrough device called ReFlow Mini which is used to treat various cerebral spinal fluid disorders along with hydrocephalus. This breakthrough technology will support to perform the flushing operation in-clinic or at-home by patients who are trained to do this procedure or by the caretakers. Due to the increasing prevalence of the disease and the innovations in the devices, this will fuel the growth of the market during the forecasted period. Some of the key global market players include Medtronic, Kaneka, B.Braun, Desu Medical, Spiegelberg Gmbh and Co. KG, and many others.
