The global passive optical network equipment market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR during the forecast period. Passive Optical networks are fibre-optic networks that employ a point-to-multipoint architecture and optical splitters to transport data from a single transmission point to numerous user terminals. The unpowered state of the fibre and the splitting, combining components are referred to as passive in this context. In contrast to an active optical network, a PON requires just electrical power at the transmit and receive points, making it intrinsically cost-effective to operate. Passive optical networks are used to concurrently transport signals to and from user endpoints in both upstream and downstream directions. Telecom operators are continuously working towards the next phase in fibre rollouts as the global rollout of GPON accelerates. NG-PON2 is a new fibre optic promising technology at even higher speeds.

Due to improvements in latency on 5G NR and 4G LTE, enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) provides more data capacity. It steered most operators into new 5G use cases by allowing them to provide mobile broadband services to users directly. As a result of improved spectral efficiency and capacity, as well as increased smartphone data, it complements adequate capacity for digital services. For instance in May 2020, As part of the RUNE (Rural Network) project, Iskratel has announced the deployment of GPON equipment for the development of an ultra-fast fibre-optic broadband network in 210 municipalities across the area. 233,000 people will be given access to the internet at a speed of up to 10 Gbit/s throughout this three-year initiative.

Furthermore, the increasing adoption of the smartphone will drive the growth of the passive optical network equipment market globally. In May 2020- Nokia has signed a collaboration with Openreach to develop and install GPON and XGS-PON fibre access technologies to expand Openreach's fibre-rich network to 4.5 million premises in the United Kingdom.
