Market Dynamics

Expansion of IoT Devices

The rise in IoT devices globally is boosting the need for uninterrupted connectivity, which is an essential aspect of satellite M2M services. According to the IoT M2M Council (IMC), in July 2024, by the end of 2029, the worldwide M2M (machine-to-machine) satellite communication market will reach around $16.2 billion, indicating a strong growth fueled by technological innovation and growing applications across industries. Advances in high-throughput satellites (HTS), low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations, and AI-based network management solutions have improved communication efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. The integration of AI and machine learning (ML) in satellite networks has also improved predictive analytics, adaptive bandwidth allocation, and real-time monitoring capabilities.

Increasing Use of Broadband, Satellite Deployments, and Technological Developments

The satellite communications sector has been experiencing unprecedented growth, fueled by accelerating deployments and technological advancements. According to the Satellite Industry Association (SIA), in June 2024, 2,781 commercial satellites were launched in 2023, representing a 20.0% boost compared to the prior year. The record-high 190 launches, the number of satellites in operation grew to 9,691 by the close of the year, an increase of 361.0% in the last five years. This growth has markedly increased global satellite communication capacity. The increase in satellite broadband deployment further emphasizes growth in the sector, with 40.0% revenue and 27.0% growth in subscribers for 2023. The overall space economy added $400 billion, with commercial satellites leading the way at $285 billion or 71.0% market share. Moreover, the satellite ground segment, such as Global Navigation Satellite Services (GNSS) and network equipment, added more than $150.4 billion. Satellite services, especially broadband and remote sensing, were key to earning $110.2 billion in revenue. These technologies are leading innovation in satellite communication, providing secure connectivity for defense, telecommunications, and remote monitoring industries.

Market Segmentation

  • Based on the type, the market is segmented into ground equipment and services.
  • Based on the end-user, the market is segmented into maritime, defense & government, enterprises, media & entertainment, and others (aviation, oil & gas, agriculture (precision farming), telemedicine, and education).

Defense & Government: A Key Segment in Market Growth

Government funding, such as higher defense budgets and space policy reforms, is propelling market growth in defense uses. For instance, in February 2025, Japan boosted defense satellite spending to improve space resilience and communications. The Kirameki 3 satellite, the newest in Japan's X-band series, delivers secure, high-speed, and high-capacity communications for the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF). The launch also demonstrates the trustworthiness of Japan's H3 launch vehicle. Japan's space-based defense resources consist of low Earth orbit monitoring satellites for watching out for prospective threats.

Regional Outlook

The global satellite communication market is further divided by geography, including North America (the US and Canada), Asia-Pacific (India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, ASEAN Countries, and the Rest of Asia-Pacific), Europe (the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, and the Rest of Europe), and the Rest of the World (the Middle East & Africa, and Latin America).

North America Region Dominates the Market with Major Share

North America holds a significant share, owing to the integration of 5G, and future mobile standards are essential for market growth as they ensure seamless connectivity with satellite infrastructure. For instance, in January 2025, ISRO launched a communication satellite of US-based firm AST SpaceMobile that aims to provide space-based cellular broadband network services on smartphones.
