A solar container refers to a mobile, containerized power system combining solar PV panels, battery storage, inverters, and intelligent management systems in a shipping container for decentralized, mobile energy production. Growth in the market for solar containers is influenced by drivers such as a growing need for decentralized energy, growth in electricity needs in remote & underserved locations, emission-free power, demand from telecommunications companies, need for secure off-grid power supply, and incentives from governments to use clean energy.  In remote areas or during emergencies, cell towers and communication hubs often require a reliable source of power. In regions with underdeveloped energy grids, telecommunications companies are increasingly relying on solar containers to power mobile towers in rural or isolated areas.

  • According to the Engineering and Operations Department of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), approximately 2,025 mobile towers operated by five mobile companies have become non-functional in 12 of the 15 districts in the northeastern part of Bangladesh due to the flood. Most of these areas have no grid infrastructure, and conventional power solutions such as diesel generators are expensive, environmentally unfriendly, and logistically difficult to deploy. In 2023, 565 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa did not have access to electricity. Solar containers provide a decentralized and scalable energy solution that can be quickly deployed to supply local electricity requirements. For example, in 2025, India installed 3.8 GW of solar open-access power, mostly catering to distant communities, agricultural activities, and small industries in a decentralized manner through solar container systems.

There are numerous railway tracks, signaling systems, and stations in regions where there is no steady grid electricity. Solar containers can provide independent, module-based power to these locations. Three major railway projects under the Ministry of Railways, having an estimated cost of around ?6,456 crore, were approved in 2024 by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The three railway schemes approved include Jamshedpur- Purulia- Asansol 3rd Line, Sardega- Bhalumuda New Double Line, and Bargarh Road- Nawapara Road New Line. Off-grid power supply systems have some benefits, especially in India, where the grid supply is not reliable. These systems give energy autonomy, decreasing dependency on state electricity boards and providing a stable power supply even in rural or disaster areas.

Integrating an off-grid solar system into a container, remote locations such as villages, farms, islands, or construction sites can receive reliable electricity without dependence on state grids.

  • In February 2025, Nomad Solar Energy launched a line of containerized mobile solar PV generators. The Nomad Energy Box is a pre-wired solar PV array integrated in a shipping container with a retractable folding rack mechanism that rolls onto the ground on wheels that match the terrain.
  • In March 2024, SolarCont developed a mobile solar container that stores foldable photovoltaic panels for portable green energy. The foldable photovoltaic panels are tucked inside a container frame with corresponding dimensions.
  • In October 2020, Klaus Faber AG launched the solar battery container mobile power system and started series production. This solution combined a 24-kW solar system with 80-kWh lithium-ion battery storage and an emergency power generator.
