UPF is a unique Virtual Network Function (VNF) that provides a high-performance user traffic forwarding engine. The UPF delivers ultra-fast packet forwarding while maintaining compatibility with all user plane capabilities by utilising Vector Packet Processing (VPP) technology. Shallow packet inspection (SPI)/Deep packet inspection (DPI), traffic optimization, and inline services are just a few instances (NAT, Firewall, DNS snooping, and so on). Integrated Deep Packet Based Inspection (DPI) Services are currently available through UPF.

The capacity to process at the network edge improves bandwidth efficiency, allows for low-latency applications, and decreases traffic in the core network.
