  • Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)

Modified atmosphere packaging was previously utilized for the packaging of food products including fruits and vegetables, and other bakery products. It comes under the flexible packaging methods and is manufactured by varying the initial gaseous environment. No further control processes during the storage period are performed. Amendment of the internal atmosphere is attained by merging three main gases, including nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2). It focusses on slower down deteriorative reactions and to constrain the evolution of spoilage microorganisms. This approach allows to pack dairy with smaller amount preservatives and consequently, it became a prevalent solution for minimally processed foods which are gradually being required by the consumers.

  • Edible Coatings and Films

Edible films and coatings are highly utilized owing to their advantages on food products along with product differentiation and its launching on the market. Coatings have parallel functions as those of conventional packaging with features to enact as resistance to gases, flavored compounds, and water vapor. It also offers extended shelf-life stability and improved structural integrity as well as handling of coated foods. However, there are some of the restraining factors of the edible coatings and films, that is, they cannot be used as the only packaging, which means secondary non-edible packaging is needed to hygienically and properly handle packed food-stuff. Besides, they are also used as carriers of different active compounds that can act as antioxidants, antimicrobials, or nutraceuticals.
