Fiber Optic Preform Market to Reach $53.8 Billion by 2035
Fiber optic preform market is projected to expand from $8.2 billion in 2025 to $53.8 billion by 2035, registering a CAGR of 18.5% from 2026 to 2035. Increasing deployment of fiber-based broadband networks, data-center connectivity, high-capacity communication infrastructure, and long-distance optical transmission is supporting demand for fiber optic preforms, which serve as the glass or polymer precursor from which optical fiber is drawn. The OECD reported that the share of fiber connections among fixed broadband subscriptions across OECD countries increased from 28% in 2019 to 42.5% in 2023, demonstrating the continuing transition of fixed broadband infrastructure toward fiber-based connectivity. The OECD also reported that 92.8% of households across 33 OECD countries had broadband connections in 2025, indicating a high level of broadband infrastructure penetration and continued requirements for network capacity and connectivity. These developments support demand for optical fiber and, consequently, the preforms used to manufacture fiber for access, backbone, data-center, and other communication networks.

The expansion of high-capacity optical networks is also increasing requirements for different fiber characteristics, including low attenuation, bend resistance, high fiber counts, and long-distance transmission capability. Optical fiber manufacturers are therefore developing preform and fiber technologies for conventional single-mode networks as well as higher-capacity and specialized applications. Sumitomo Electric Industries has developed the VAD process for optical fiber preform manufacturing and applies it to ultra-low-loss silica-core optical fiber, while its technology portfolio also includes multi-core optical fiber for next-generation high-capacity networks. Hengtong manufactures preforms for G.652.D low-water-peak fiber, G.657.A fiber for FTTx applications, and G.654 fiber for long-distance and submarine communication. These product requirements connect continued broadband and optical-network deployment with demand for advanced preform manufacturing capabilities.
Single-Mode Fiber Preforms Gain Importance as Fiber Broadband and High-Capacity Networks Expand
The glass single-mode segment is expected to remain an important part of the fiber optic preform market because single-mode fiber is widely used in access, carrier, long-distance, and data-center optical networks. Corning's SMF-28 Ultra single-mode fiber is designed for carrier access, mobile, fiber-to-the-home, and data-center applications and is available in both traditional 242-micrometer and reduced 200-micrometer diameters for high-fiber-count cable designs. Corning also offers ultra-low-loss single-mode fiber for long-haul terrestrial networks, including products compliant with ITU-T G.654.C. These product portfolios illustrate the range of single-mode fiber specifications that can be supported through corresponding preform manufacturing processes.
Single-mode technology is also being extended toward specialized high-capacity applications. Sumitomo Electric states that it has developed ultra-low-loss silica-core fiber using its VAD preform manufacturing technology, while its research and development activities include multi-core fiber designed to increase transmission capacity. Hengtong's preform portfolio includes G.652.D, G.657.A, and G.654 applications covering long-distance trunk communication, FTTx, and submarine cable networks. The continued diversification of fiber specifications creates requirements for preforms with controlled refractive-index profiles, low attenuation, dimensional consistency, and specialized core and cladding structures.
Recent Developments
- In September 2026, HFCL approved an additional investment of approximately ?820 crore to expand its optical fiber, optical fiber cable, and preform manufacturing capacities. The expansion includes planned preform capacity of 600 metric tons annually and is intended to support increasing requirements for optical communication products.
- In June 2026, Corning announced a multiyear, multibillion-dollar agreement with Amazon to produce optical fiber for data centers and expand its U.S. fiber-optics manufacturing footprint. The agreement suppoexpansion of Corning's North Carolina facilities and is expected to create 1,000 advanced manufacturing jobs.
- In May 2026, Corning and NVIDIA announced a multiyear commercial and technology partnership to expand U.S. optical connectivity manufacturing for AI infrastructure. Corning plans to increase U.S. optical connectivity manufacturing capacity tenfold and expand U.S. fiber production capacity by more than 50%, with three new manufacturing facilities planned in North Carolina and Texas.
