Diabetes is known as the world’s fastest growing lifestyle related disease. The diabetic population has witnessed an exponential rise. Change in eating habits, reduced physical workout and family history have led to increase in obesity, which is the major cause of type-2 diabetes in adults. According to the WHO, diabetes prevalence has been increasing steadily over the past three decades. In the year 1980, the diabetic population was around 108 million and these number has increased to 415 million by 2015 as per the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The rapidly growing prevalence of diabetes accounted for around 12% of the global healthcare expenditure round $673 billion in 2015. The amount is projected to increase to $802 billion by 2040 as per IDF. Therefore, increasing prevalence of diabetes further increases the demand of dietary supplements that further propels the market growth.

Suitable alternates to obtain omega-3 polyunsaturated acid further boost krill oil market growth

Krill oil can be considered as one of the alternatives of fish oil to derive omega-3 from them. Krill contains three active components such as omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, and asta-xanthin and thus is considered as different from traditional fish oils. Krill are extensively consumed by many food varieties of sea creatures including whales, seals, sea birds, penguins, squid and fish. Owing to general interest in omega-3 fatty acids, various capture vessels are being or have been constructed to capture krill and further process them to obtain krill oils and ultimately omega-3 fatty acids. The current Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources treaty allows 6.55 MMT to be caught in the major statistical areas, however, according to the FAO (2009) the average catch over a decade has been about 120,000 MT. Though krill have very low oil content, however, abundance of krill will serve better opportunity for the market as an alternative to fish oil.
