Online Video Streaming will Accelerate in Indian Entertainment Industry Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic

Indian entertainment industry will see the considerable growth of 13.9% during the forecast period. The online video industry has witnessed a positive impact from the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in India. The players are expanding the availability of their video streaming platforms in India. Amid the outbreak, the government mandated the shelter-in-place at home for its population which is increasing the viewership pool of these video streaming companies. Some of video streaming service providers in India such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Hotstar have already seen around a rise of around 20% in their viewership since the beginning of March 2020. Furthermore, Video streaming companies are coming up with new solutions to increase their subscribers across the globe. However, owing to the increased internet consumption through multimedia streaming apps on mobile and computers, there are serious chances of a breakdown of the telecom network. Due to this, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has warned in a letter to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to reduce the quality to SD from HD. COAI also urged popular Over-The-Top (OTT) players including Netflix, Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Sony Liv, Alt Balaji, and YouTube, among others to do so. So far, Amazon Prime and Netflix have agreed to lower the quality. Thus, this may reduce around a 25% load of internet traffic. Hence, all these factors together create significant scope for the online video streaming industry throughout the forecast period in the country.
