Global Infrastructure Monitoring Market Size, Share & Trends Analysis Report, By Technology (Wired and Wireless), By Component (Hardware and Software and Services), By End-User (Civil, Aerospace and Defense, Energy, Industrial Machinery, Mining, and Others) and Forecast, 2020-2026

Published: Jun 2020 | Report Code: OMR2021951 | Category : Internet of Things | Delivery Format: /

The global infrastructure monitoring market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of nearly 16.0% during the forecast period. Infrastructure monitoring is also known as structural health monitoring (SHM), which involves a range of connected sensors for collection and analysis of data, at every moment during the service life of the structure. The major factors contributing to the growth of the market include significant investment in infrastructure projects and rising demand for SHM in the energy sector. Both developed and developing countries are focusing on the investment in infrastructure projects owing to the increasing ageing infrastructure across the countries, which creates several problems such as delay in shipments and losing time and disruptions in the energy supplies.

As per the Congressional Budget Office, in the US, Federal spending to support investment totaled $492 billion in 2018. Over half of those funds, $256 billion, were invested on physical capital, which comprises structures (including water and power projects, government buildings, and transportation infrastructure), crucial equipment (including machinery, computers, and vehicles), and software. This results in an increasing demand for SHM systems to improve the reliability of existing infrastructure and provides support to the decision-makers and maintenance managers to prioritize rehabilitation and replacement programs.

The objective of the SHM system is to detect and measure the state of damage or deterioration that may take place during the service life. Currently, repairs and interventions are normally conducted when the damage has already occurred. From the viewpoint of life-cycle cost analysis, it can be a more costly option for the organization. These repair and interventions increase unexpected downtime of the facility or structure, and the maintenance solutions are not as potential. SHM systems can play a vital role to detect and measure these structural defects in the early stages, which results in more efficient and cost-effective rehabilitation and maintenance. Therefore, maintenance managers and owners of capital-intensive assets have been adopting reliable and cost-effective visualization and assessment solutions to ensure reliability and safety of these structures.

Market Segmentation

The global infrastructure monitoring market is segmented based on technology, component, and end-user. Based on technology, the market is classified into wired and wireless. Based on the component, the market is classified into hardware and software and services. Based on end-user, the market is classified into civil, aerospace and defense, energy, industrial machinery, mining, and others.

Hardware is anticipated to hold significant share in the market

In 2019, hardware is expected to witness potential share in the market owing to the significant demand for sensors for SHM. These are designed to facilitate the monitoring process and act as a decision-making tool to the maintenance engineers, which will ensure the safety of the public, and the facility. SHM sensors significantly rely on the collection of accurate real-time measurements of the condition of the structural element and communicating this data with the control system. A typical SHM system consists of a network of sensors which is intended to measure different parameters associated with the existing condition of the structure as well as its surrounding environments, such as humidity, stress, strain, humidity, vibration, temperature, and inclination.

Regional Outlook

Geographically, the market is classified into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Rest of the World (RoW). In 2019, North America is anticipated to hold a significant share in the market owing to the considerable investment in infrastructure projects coupled with the rising concerns regarding aging infrastructure in the region. In addition, increasing implementation IoT solutions are further leveraging the market growth in the region.  Asia-Pacific is estimated to witness potential growth in the market during the forecast period owing to the rising smart city projects, the rising development of port infrastructure, and increasing investment in transportation infrastructure.

Market Players Outlook

The major players operating in the market include National Instruments Corp., Spectris plc, Structural Monitoring Systems plc, Xylem Inc., and COWI A/S. The market players are constantly focusing on gaining major market share by adopting mergers & acquisitions, geographical expansion, product launch, and partnerships and collaborations. For instance, in May 2020, Toshiba Corp. introduced a Sensor-Based SHM system to fight aging infrastructure. It is developed as part of “Robot and Sensor System Development Project for Infrastructure Maintenance and Disaster Survey” under the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).  Toshiba performed its research in partnership with Kyoto University. It comprises the brand-new sensing technology, which enables the SHM to visualize damage in areas where workers cannot monitor directly, such as inside of the concrete, and determine the level of deterioration. It offers an opportunity to prioritize bridges that requires urgent maintenance and supports better the use of limited budget and labor.
