This is leading to increasing demand for lidocaine patches, a sodium channel blocker, that may support to modulate neuropathic pain by lowering the function of these sodium channels and reversing the effects of sodium channel upregulation. These patches are used to provide relief from the pain of post-herpetic neuralgia (neuropathic pain), such as the burning, aches, or stabbing pains, that may last for months or years.

Lidocaine is a group of drugs referred to as local anesthetics. It functions by stopping nerves from transmitting pain signals. As a patch, it applies to the skin only once a day as required for pain. Additionally, the prevalence of cancer is rising significantly, which results in the demand for chronic pain medications. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2018, the global burden of cancer is estimated to have increased to 18.1 million new incidences and 9.6 million mortalities. Cancer pain is normally of mixed etiology, with neuropathic and nociceptive components. This, in turn, increases the need for neuropathy pain management for cancer patients. Topical lidocaine patches have been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia and other painful peripheral neuropathies. Therefore, it can also be useful for pain management in cancer patients.

Non-Opioid Pain Patches Finds Significant Application in Hospitals

A significant number of surgeries performed in the hospitals has led to the demand for pain management medications. There is a significant rise in the number of joint replacement procedures performed across the globe. As per the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), during the period, 2017-2018, 70,502 knee replacements and 58,492 hip replacements were performed in Canada. This shows a rise of 17.0% and 17.4%, respectively, over the last 5 years. Joint replacement surgeries are also rising in other countries such as the US, India, UK, and China. Non-opioid pain patches can be used to reduce post-operative joint replacement procedures. This, in turn, is contributing to the significant application of non-opioid pain patches in hospitals.
